On this day:

Everything for everyone

Last week at a roundtable I attended in Helsinki, Google's country manager for Finland and Sweden, Petri Kokko, pointed out that, if current data storage trends continue, by 2015 an iPod would be able to hold every piece of music ever recorded; by 2018 it could carry every single movie ever recorded.
Aside from the obvious 'wow' factor, how should you respond to such a prospect? What does it all mean?
If downloadable music and online communities such as MySpace and last.fm have reduced the need for ordinary music fans to consult expert tastemakers, perhaps the fully-loaded iPod of 2015 implies a return to expertise. Without the advice of people who have experienced this music already, how could one hope to make any sense of all recorded music being instantly available on one small device?
